I can understand where a lot of people get the impression that the dealer is better since Most dealers require that you complete training to be a brand-specific certified Tech. Such as a friend of mine when I was in auto tech went to work for the local bmw dealer only performing oil changes, BMW sent him to NC for 6 weeks to learn all of the 'proper' techniques to changing the oil and filter in a BMW... Like the guy my buddy at the ford dealer sent me to was 8 weeks behind. But then again the guy is an SVT certified master tech.

Dealers benefit from having the best software and data bases of information on the cars they make. Its not that the guy doing the work is better or worse its more about what he has at his disposal.
