the new 4runners are hella safe, I helped with traffic on a wreck a few weeks ago where a 4runner flipped off of an overpass and landed on its top, all passengers and driver walked away

It's not a matter of can't afford to drive. If your smart with your money your daily driver would be something with good MPG's. If I had an hour ride to work I'd be driving a Civic Hybrid. Proabably save $3000 a year with a 20 MPG increase.

But if you look at how much a civic hybrid cost, it is going to take several years to break even. Insurance, tax, and interest would make it hard for it to be cheaper to own two cars opposed to one.

I threw the hybrid out as an example. I'm sure thats not what he's looking for when he says cheap DD. Anything 4 cyl and small is going to get 10 -15 MPG more than a 4 Runner.

FWIW, my Accord gets pretty close to the same MPG as my fiance's Fit.  I did a comparison with all highway driving.  Unfortunately, I think the reason why the Fit didn't do so well is because it's an AT and underpowered.  It would downshift on grades that weren't very steep.  If it were a MT, I would have definitely gotten better mileage.

cheap DD (ideally) = decent paint, no rust, no dents, clean interior.  i'd like to keep it to a maximum price of $3k and be something i don't have to put money into to get running.

I still don't know if I'm going to do it.. I'm just browsing around to see what's out there..
