Title: Element Transmission
Post by: BliNx197 on April 28, 2009, 04:35:26 PM
Anyone thought or looked more into this swap?
I know someone on G7A.1 Talked about an AWD Accord but with all the custom work it'd take it wouldn't be worth it.

But about a week ago I was checking out the back of an Element w/ "Real Time AWD" stamped on the back of it, It got me thinking why can't we use their transmissions and axles? I mean they apparently offer a 5M/T AWD Transmission in 2 trims,... and they are k24s

could it be done? Just tryna think outside the box, if it's an overwhelming NO then feel free to delete this post Mods.

Thanks

Found this...

obviously theres the possibility that it couldn't

I'm not expecting to handle like an STI/Evo with this mod. I'm just looking at the fact that I'll have some real power and need a way to put it to the ground in 1st and 2nd. The AWD system is apparently mechanical putting up to 70% of TQ to the rear wheels. Also this means No ECU changes and no electronics changes What so ever. The basic parts are mechanically based, which could all be found in a junk yard for a decent price.

Anyone gonna throw a response at this?

The amount of fabrication required to mount the rear diff. really isn't a cost effective nor easy to accomplish swap. Granted, its been done with the older 3rd gen integras utilizing crv parts, but IMHO it ain't worth it. If you know a good fabricator that's willing to work for peanuts, then do it. Otherwise, don't. I will say it won't be a cheap thing to do, but if you got the dough, the sky's the limit.

That would require a lot of fabrication, but go for it if you want.

Oh yea definately a good amount of fabrication but hell, this was just a thought for the future, I figure this mod will really only be beneficial to F/I guys or possibly k20/k24 guys making a good amount of torque.
Anyone looked into this for the V6 with the k23a1 tranmission either?

4 wheel drive just adds parts that can break.  IMHO you're not dealing with something that can handle tons of stress.  Yeah it's from a car that can tow weight, but that doesn't translate into power handling....you'd need a custom length propeller shaft, custom mounts for the diff, Element rear knuckles, whatever fab work it takes to mount them, and a whole lot of planning.  You'll need to baby it since those diffs are not meant to take horrendous amounts of abuse.  To get everything to "usable" as in "abuse ready", you're talking about a ton of money.  Then you need to make the power to justify having it, which adds up even more quickly.

V6 with a K23a1? Doesn't exist...all K series engines are 4cyl.  You're thinking of the RDX's available SH-AWD system??? In that case...that's a definite "No" because that system is PCM controlled and would be a nightmare to work with without the context of the ECU.

Propeller shaft scares me a little, rear knuckles and custom mounts dont raise an eye brow honestly, I plan on swapping to rear discs soon and having mounts made dont seem to be an arm and a leg, but as previously said, the thought of using this system to absorb huge amounts of power, as for justifiable power I think if this worked itd be justifiable. and As for the k23a1 transmission bolts up to a V6. I need to find the link but somone dropped the RDX-s engine into a earlier chassis honda and had to use a CL-S or TL tranny for it. Either way the fact remains as you said, reliability under abuse,.. negative

K series engine bolting up to a V6 transmission?? Now that's something I've never heard before...Skippy is very interested to see this.

Only to the k23a1,.. found the thread just a few minutes back but deleted it, apparently some poor bastard bought a brand new RDX engine hoping to drop it in another Chassis and figured out the trans didnt line up,... couldnt return it either :-(

Sounds like someone didn't do their research.

Ehhh u know,.. swap guys always tryna innovate, thats why we have sweet builds like the GSR Bs and k20/k24 frank

No...LS/VTEC and K frank builds have a completely different premise...taking the best parts of same series engines and slapping them together to develop more power.  Dropping a four cylinder motor into a car with a V6 transmission and hoping it will work leans more towards "I've got more money than brains".

I'm quite sure J series transmissions will not bolt up to K series blocks....H series engines need an adapter plate to use B series transmissions....now THAT i know is possible.  K series engines are too new to have any kind of cross-platform swapability like that.

Sorry I just can't see the purpose of chop/cut/weld on a K24 or even J30 based platform.  There simply isn't enough power (or any, for that matter).

I'm not too sure if anybody ran into this info but here is a link of an element owner who pulled his tranny apart and put in a 6th gear in a 2wd 5 speed element. http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums ... 55&t=25635 (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=0124bb71a50142149a024bc916e2ad55&t=25635)

-------------2wd element 5 speed ratio/   RSX type S 6 speed Ratio/   TSX 6 Speed Ratio
final drive----4.765---------------------4.39-------------------------4.76
Reverse------3.583---------------------3.27-------------------------3.58
1st. Gear----3.533---------------------3.27-------------------------3.27
2nd. Gear----2.042---------------------2.13-------------------------2.04

Yeah, it's been talked about before.  I don't think it's a practical idea for the Accord, when you can just swap in a TSX 6MT or EuroR Accord 6MT instead.
