Title: Oil analysis thread Post by: ikethegreat on February 24, 2011, 09:57:57 AM So during my last oil change, I collected an oil sample and sent it to Blackstone Labs for an oil analysis. I figured since I just passed the 50k mile mark, I would see how the engine is holding up so far. I also wanted to see how much oil life I had left after my 5k mile oil change.
I figured other people might be interested in seeing various oil analysis's since oil type is a big topic on the forums. So if anyone else has done an oil analysis, post it up! Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: striktlyaccord on February 28, 2011, 05:21:35 PM I've done 2 analysis reports from Blackstone and am going onto my third with my next oil change. I'm running Mobil 1 5W-20 with good results and am waiting until a 10,000 mile interval on the next test, per Blackstone's recommendation. Why are you running 5W-30, because you have a V6?
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: ikethegreat on March 01, 2011, 07:49:25 AM I'm running 10w30 actually. Paul recommended it to me for better engine protection.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Mike on March 01, 2011, 08:31:59 AM I'm running 10w30 actually. Paul recommended it to me for better engine protection. I'm going to try this on my next change. I'm hesitant to go that thick in the winter. Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: timot_one on March 01, 2011, 08:41:16 AM I run 10w30 on my car. The only thing I've noticed is that my oil pressure is higher before my car is warmed up.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Mike on March 01, 2011, 08:45:38 AM I'm going to give it a try maybe it will quiet it down a bit it's not overly loud but, there is a little tick...
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: gargantula99 on March 01, 2011, 09:24:36 AM I switched to regular 5-20 from synthetic 5-20 at my oil change. I think I'm gonna keep it like that. Plus it saves me like $40.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: striktlyaccord on March 01, 2011, 03:27:24 PM I'm running 10w30 actually. Paul recommended it to me for better engine protection. Oh, 10W-30, my bad. Is this a V6 thing, or could 4-bangers with light mods benefit too? Not sure if the cold New England climate would work well with it though...? Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Mike on March 01, 2011, 03:30:37 PM ^This
I run 10w30 on my car. The only thing I've noticed is that my oil pressure is higher before my car is warmed up. Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: timot_one on March 01, 2011, 09:52:33 PM Keep in mind that I'm also running a modified motor that takes 5w30 from Honda/Acura.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: striktlyaccord on March 01, 2011, 10:30:48 PM Keep in mind that I'm also running a modified motor that takes 5w30 from Honda/Acura. Yeh, our engines are slightly different. :gay: Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: aiman2005 on July 18, 2012, 01:40:25 AM whats your recommendation for `05 hybrid?
i live in middle east, so we have high temperatures most of the year Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: 06RockHead on January 21, 2013, 10:07:47 AM Ok so I'm curious I'm V6, are you guys saying I should be running higher weight? Right now I'm on Mobil1 5w - 20 ful syn EP. I'm also in the north east where tonight it's going to touch 0 not sure I would benefit from a higher weight
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: ikethegreat on January 21, 2013, 10:16:44 AM I run 5w-30 but some people with higher mileage run 10w-30.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: gargantula99 on January 21, 2013, 10:25:40 AM I'm running basic castrol gtx 5w20 on my J.
Title: Re: Re: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Mike on January 21, 2013, 10:38:13 AM I'm running basic castrol gtx 5w20 on my J. ur oil is to thin. I run GTX high mileage 10w30Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: CrackerTeg on January 21, 2013, 10:47:04 AM Granted, I don't have a J but I haven't run anything less than 10w30 in a while. GTX dino oil here.
Like Mike said Nel, you're oil is too thin. Do at least 5w30 dino oil dude. Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: 06RockHead on January 21, 2013, 10:49:06 AM Well I'll change it up next change, and I'm still under 90K
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: gargantula99 on January 21, 2013, 10:51:21 AM So running the Honda recommended weight that's on the cap is too thin?
I read through Paul's thread a few years back and determined that synthetic wasn't necessary so I ended up switching to Dino oil. Title: Re: Re: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: CrackerTeg on January 21, 2013, 11:03:48 AM So running the Honda recommended weight that's on the cap is too thin? Basically, yes. Up the weight a hair. That 5w20 recommended by Honda is generally for the first few years/ few thousand miles and grandma driving it in absolutely perfect conditions on country roads. None of us here take it easy and none of us drive in those conditions.I read through Paul's thread a few years back and determined that synthetic wasn't necessary so I ended up switching to Dino oil. Title: Re: Re: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Mike on January 21, 2013, 11:05:50 AM So running the Honda recommended weight that's on the cap is too thin? Paul would recommend 10 30. 5 20 is good for fuel economy not longevityI read through Paul's thread a few years back and determined that synthetic wasn't necessary so I ended up switching to Dino oil. Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: gargantula99 on January 21, 2013, 11:37:24 AM I'll be sure to switch to 10w30 on my next oil change. Thanks fellas.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Mike on January 21, 2013, 11:58:22 AM You could go up to 5W30 and use 10W30 in the summer.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: CrackerTeg on January 21, 2013, 12:13:29 PM ^This.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Rich01 on January 21, 2013, 06:49:37 PM I run Castrol GTX 10W-30 in the winter and 10w-40 in the summer. Granted I do have 141K+ miles on my car.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: gargantula99 on January 21, 2013, 06:55:34 PM I'm halfway there, buddy.
I'm just going to run 10w30 year round. Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: ikethegreat on January 22, 2013, 07:52:41 AM Truthfully I just buy 5w-30 or 10w-30 depending upon which is on sale...
Title: Re: Re: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Mike on January 22, 2013, 08:29:55 AM Truthfully I just buy 5w-30 or 10w-30 depending upon which is on sale... Oil sales are usually by brand both weights should be on sale together. Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: timot_one on January 22, 2013, 11:48:59 AM I run Brad Penn 10w30 in my k. 5w20 is thin for fuel economy. I'd run 10w30 if you drive your car somewhat hard and want better longevity.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: CrackerTeg on January 22, 2013, 01:15:37 PM ^This. Exactly the reason why I run 10w30. I beat the piss out of my car and want it to last.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: HEcreated487 on January 22, 2013, 01:19:24 PM I just changed to Mobil 1 EP Synthetic, 5W-30 in my I4 (75K and counting). It's a good compromise (IMO) for longevity and fuel economy, and I don't have "seasons". I drive like a grandpa anyway, because OLD.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: timot_one on January 22, 2013, 01:24:12 PM I've read up on different oils and Mobile 1 is no bueno. There was an article written way back about the differences between quite a few oil brands, and M1 tested poorly.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: HEcreated487 on January 22, 2013, 01:27:02 PM ^^ Oh crap. Thanks for the info, Tim. I was using Castrol GTX for a while, since it was affordable. Others in this thread have been using it as well, so that's encouraging. I'll switch it up on the next go around.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: CrackerTeg on January 22, 2013, 01:42:52 PM Like Tim said, M1 is poop. IIRC, Amsoil is the top dog but dino oil works just fine. Switch back to the GTX. Its proven to work and has been for years.
And Mike, you're not old. You just act that way. Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: timot_one on January 22, 2013, 01:45:43 PM Here's the article I was talking about. It has some comparisons of a few different oils.
http://www.animegame.com/cars/Oil%20Tests.pdf (http://www.animegame.com/cars/Oil%20Tests.pdf) Here's a good read on engine oil also. http://micapeak.com/info/oiled.html (http://micapeak.com/info/oiled.html) Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: thisaznboi88 on January 22, 2013, 04:08:48 PM damn that is one old ass article.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: striktlyaccord on January 22, 2013, 11:07:26 PM I think comparing brands is somewhat of a mute point. However, comparing weights is interesting... might consider 5w-30 in the future, but will see what my next oil analysis yields first. Blackstone Labs ftw.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Arielit0oo on January 26, 2013, 12:40:06 AM Damn, this whole time I've been running 5w20.. 10w30 on my next oil change it is!
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: 06RockHead on March 07, 2013, 12:03:59 AM That first article scared me a little. both are kind of old, it would be very interesting to see very current results to see if improvment has been made in the major brands. How did you guys feel about the performance of the Royal purple (The affordable royal purple).
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: ikethegreat on March 07, 2013, 07:42:05 AM Royal purple is overrated and over priced IMHO.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: gargantula99 on March 07, 2013, 08:17:59 AM I agree with Ike.
Title: Re: Re: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Mike on March 07, 2013, 09:39:47 AM Royal purple is overrated and over priced IMHO. yup... Same with Mobil 1 imho.Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: 06RockHead on March 07, 2013, 12:04:13 PM Well ill be going to GTX then. You guys use the full syn with titanium or what ever ?
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: CrackerTeg on March 07, 2013, 12:23:12 PM Regular old dino oil dude.
Title: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: gargantula99 on March 07, 2013, 12:30:09 PM Same here. Dino oil for me.
Title: Re: Re: Oil analysis thread Post by: Mike on March 07, 2013, 12:51:49 PM I use gtx high mileage. It is a blend seemed to help with some smoke issues I was seeing in the cold
