how to check Freon

What kind of smell are you getting? That will be the key point on determining what is going on.

It's only for the first couple of minutes. It smells almost like skunk and garbage but also a musty old air smell even though it was just used. I never turn the car off with the air on cause somebody told me that can create problems. I saw water coming out of the bottom of the car, so I know it is draining. But not sure if its draining properly. The other thing is that its only been cool not cold which I think is a seperate issue. Thanks

You may have caught something in your blower motor that is pushing that odor back into your cabin filter and back into cabin of the car. How dirty was your cabin filter? It your cabin filter was extremely dirty, I would highly advise cleaning out the blower motor. As for the cool not cold issue, take it to shop and ask for an A/C Performance Check to make sure you have enough freon in your system. They should also put a dye in the system to make sure you don't have any leaks.

The filter was dirty but mostly only between the pleats. How could something get stuck in the blower motor. Could it be something from the outside that got sucked in,or is that not possible.

The blower motor sits right under the cabin filter. Dirt and debris can get trapped inside and sucked into that blower motor. I have seen numerous of times were leaves and all sorts of debris get stuck in the blower motor. The blower motor then works hard because of the extra weight it has to push to force air into your cabin. That is how most leaves get trapped in your cabin filter.

I found a shop that would do it for 45. He would EVAC, recharge the system oil, and charge 2 dollars per oz of need freon. Is that a good deal?
