Title: Brighter Back-up lights
Post by: sherker55 on January 17, 2010, 10:24:46 PM
Alright, I checked all of the posts and I can't find anything.  Since I have tinted windows, backing up at night is a bitch!  I was wondering if anyone has experimented with using other bulbs like Sylvania Silverstars?

there is a couple people like peiro, rich (from florida) and i idk who else have HID's in the back up lights...now you can also upgrade to some super bright SMD 7440 reverse bulbs maybe that helps out..

I have Polarg bulbs, and they do a pretty decent job.  They light up enough behind me to be able to see well enough through my reverse camera.  I plan on retrofitting HID's into my reverse lights in the future.  Your only option is either brighter bulbs, or considering a HID retrofit option.

Tim, are those better than led's?  do you have a part number or something?

HIDs would be the way to go. I also plan on retrofitting HIDs back there. Hell, I have the ballasts and shit so its just a matter of having time.

It's easy dude. Anyone of us can help out with that. Tim does have a shit ton of knowledge when it comes to electrical shit so he'd be the best advice. As for the retrofit, it's a matter of finding a bulb that is similar in size to the reverse light socket and doing a bit of trimming. My setup will involve two seperate switches. The reverse lght trigger and a another switch that I can flip on at will for those pesky tailgaters.

i was thinking in something like that but it will be for a rear foglight project retrofit in one of the reverse lights

I wouldn't say they're better.  They're okay for what they are.  They are 7440 bulbs.  I have these Polarg M2 (http://www.racinglab.com/polm2hyp74bu.html) bulbs, but I would try these Polarg L11 (http://www.racinglab.com/polarg-l-type-l11.html) bulbs next.  I've had the Polarg bulbs in my car since the end of 2004.

Yeah, I guess.  I replaced pretty much all of my bulbs around 5 years ago.  I replace my fog light bulbs like 4 times a year, but all my other bulbs do pretty well.

my LED reverse lights are super bright, but not bright enough to blind someone....
check ebay, i got my license plate leds, trunk leds, and reverse leds for like $15.99 shipped and they have been great for over a year

Unfortunately, you can either take the recommendations given in here or take the plunge and try a set yourself.  I'd recommend you do a little bit of research and read some reviews from others before spending your money.  I can only give a review for what I've used.  As I've mentioned, the Polarg bulbs I have are brighter than stock and have lasted 5 years.  As for other bulbs, I have no experience with them, so I can't really give you an honest opinion.  The shitty part is that you will get an opinion for as many people that are offering them.
