Looks good.  Do you know the volume of the enclosure?

Nice.  Want to make me one for a 12" round sub?

I don't know the exact volume Tim but I'm ballparking it in the 1.0 cubic foot area. This is based on the enclosure the sub was originally in.

I would make one Dave but that probably won't happen until I move. You going to Rich's bbq right?

Looks good Z. Similar to the box Tim made for Arie.

I don't know the exact volume Tim but I'm ballparking it in the 1.0 cubic foot area. This is based on the enclosure the sub was originally in.

You can use small packing peanuts and a 0.5 or 1.0 cu/ft cardboard box to figure it out.  You should build fiberglass enclosures 20% smaller than a MDF enclosure.  The properties of fiberglass make it appear to be larger than it actually is.  So an 0.8 cu/ft fiberglass enclosure would have the same acoustic properties as a 1.0 cu/ft mdf enclosure.  That's why some people use that fiberglass filler stuff in enclosures.

Its my topic so its cool with me.

Denny, its always been New Orleans. I was just trying to find work so I wouldn't have to go to New Orleans.

I'm going to NOLA next May for work. I'll help you measure the volume of your enclosure.

But that means unvelcroing(sp) it from the trunk, unscrewing the sub and pulling out the polyfill.  :'(

Polyfill isn't doing a damn thing for ya since it's a fiberglass box bud. Wouldn't you like to know that your enclosure is the correct size for your sub? If it's too large or small, you can actually damage the woofer.

He don't care. He's all about looks over function.

Make it happen brolo.

Ah well, I thought the polyfill would've helped. As for the size of the enclosure, now you got me a bit worried.

Nelson, STFU.

You should be worried. Just because it's an enclosure, it doesn't mean that it's good for your sub. Drivers have different suspension systems (stuff or loose) for the type of enclosure they're designed for. If the enclosure it too large or small, it will affect how the driver moves. Ultimately, you will have lateral movement in the voice coil, which results in heat and ultimately failure.

Look up the Thiele Small parameters of your sub and measure your enclosure, taking into account that your enclosure needs to be 80% of the recommended volume because it's made out of fiberglass. If you're lucky, the enclosure will be too big and you'll only need to take up extra space. It's super easy to fix that problem. Just text me and I'll tell you how.

If the enclosure is too small, you're kinda fucked and I would recommend starting over.

What I just found for it:
Minimum Sealed Box Volume 0.66 cubic feet
Maximum Sealed Box Volume 1.00 cubic feet

Title: Re: My custom box

So, then your range would be 0.528-0.80 cubic feet.

I suspect I have slightly more volume than that currently.

That's a good problem then.

Indeed. A buddy also happened to have a sheet of MDF from an old project. Free fix in my future.

Just tools, time and experience required for that one.

I'd say I have a little of all three.

Nice box, Z.  How long was the actual process?

Title: Re: My custom box
Post by: CrackerTeg on June 12, 2014, 08:30:32 AM
16 hours total. That's with getting stuff I needed, eating, and drinking.

Nice. I'm thinking of doing a project like this.  Any recommeded DIY instruction sources?

My sources for inspiration were pimp my ride and I stayed at a holiday inn express once.  :D

In all honesty, I winged it. I did cut the fiberglass sheets into smaller squares to make it easier to manage. As for the resin/ hardener ratio, again, I winged it. There are directions for the ratio but real men don't read directions.

does it hit?

Title: Re: My custom box
Post by: CrackerTeg on March 04, 2015, 01:34:48 PM
It fills in the low end rather nicely especially when listening to metal with a good double bass drum in the track. Does it rattle dental fillings loose? No and that wasn't what I was going for.

yeah, i love the look of a custom box molded to look smooth and flow well w/the trunk

i'm pass that stage in my life where i want something crazy and what i do is keep my 10" Sub behind my Driver's seat and it makes enough Bass plus free back massage...lol

i can't part ways w/all the wiring and Capacitor in the back just in case i wanna throw something back in the trunk area...it sounds like it gives what you want and in the end, thats what matters
