Title: Red Airbag Light
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on August 16, 2010, 03:39:10 PM
I'm surprised that I couldn't find any other similar threads to this.

Anyways, this just started happening today. I was driving off to UCF to get my books, and noticed that the red airbag light came on above my fuel meter. My mom was with me in the passenger seat. I turned the car off, then turned it back on, but it didn't go away. I told my mom to get out of the seat then sit back down, and it went away. It didn't come back at all until I got close to getting home, and it came back on. Now it won't go away at all.

Any ideas on what this could be related to?

There is a sensor that turns off the airbag if a certain weight is on the seat. I don't know what the weight is but, it is ment as a child safety device. Could be the sensor?

I have that same problem.  I'm pretty sure it's an SRS issue.  I believe there's a TSB about it.

^What Tim said...There is a TSB on it but Honda wanted to keep mine overnight and plug it up to every computer they had to figure out the issue. I think it's more of an issue on the 6th gen's. GL man

Okay thanks. I'll have to do some looking around for what TSB it is then.

Ask Skippy.  He's the one that told me about it.  He will have good advice for you.

Well it's pretty obvious that we've figured out the culprit, but I'd just like to post some information as to when it's happening. I drove to dinner, and it was off. After dinner I headed to Walmart, and it was off. When  left Walmart, it was back on again. After that, it's been on ever since. It seems like it just turns on and off whenever it feels like it.

I still have to read Scott's thread, but I will read it and figure out what to do.

Thanks again for all the help.

Hell, I've already thought about trading in for an Accord 666 because of these issues, but I'm sure that's never going to happen with the cost of college.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: Mike on August 17, 2010, 09:36:39 AM
I've been trying to make this trade for a year the 666's aren't easy to find!

Is this airbag problem a safety concern for my passengers? I haven't been driving any passengers since this started happening.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light

It wasn't an issue before 1992 so I don't think its an issue now.

You're probably ok Jeff. Mine went on and off for around 3years and never did it cause injury. Even if you get a 666 you have to deal with the 3rd gear TSB.

I believe I found the TSB.

I'm going to print this out and take a look to see if my VIN # falls within that criteria.

My car doesn't fall under that list.  When your air bag light is on, do you notice that your seat belt light doesn't light up when you undo your seat belt?

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on October 22, 2010, 02:17:41 PM
Shit, my bad Tim... I didn't realize that there was a new post in this thread!

Anyways, yeah, when the airbag light is on, and I unbuckle my seatbelt, the airbag light stays on, and the actual unbuckled seatbelt light never comes on. I've also tried buckling in my seatbelt before turning the car on, and that keeps the light away. I'm still trying to figure out if it's an issue with my driver side buckle, or if the passenger side buckle is involved too.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: timot_one on October 22, 2010, 10:54:09 PM
I've noticed that it happens regardless of whether or not I have my seatbelt on before I start my car.  I think it has something to do with the seatbelt switch on the DS.  I'm going to be doing a little bit of looking around under my seat when I have time.

I forgot to post an update to this.

Over Christmas break I took my car over to the dealership, and had them take a look at it. They basically had a firm grasp on my balls since they tell you that you may get charged the $80 diagnostic fee if the problem isn't under warranty.

After they did the diagnostic, the service advisor said that an incomplete code was being thrown or some shit, and that it has to do with the driver side seatbelt. However, here's the kick. He said that some kind of lubricant was sprayed into the seat belt buckle, causing the code to be thrown. I didn't say anything about that, because I thought it was complete bullshit. I tried telling him that I never sprayed anything or spilled anything in there. My grandfather may have, though, since he thinks that WD-40 fixes everything, but I don't know. So since the buckle was sprayed with lubricant, it's no longer under the lifetime warranty.

He said that it'd be about $70 to get it fixed. Right now I'm thinking of doing two things. Either take the car to a different dealer and seeing what they say, or trying to fix the problem myself. The bad part of the first plan is that I may get fucked with that $80 fee. Oh yeah, the service advisor was nice and didn't charge me the fee, so I was able to walk away with my genitals, haha. As far as replacing the seat belt buckle myself goes, I would have no clue at all for what to do.

So yeah, there's my update.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: timot_one on February 16, 2011, 09:28:43 PM
The buckle is only like $51 from Majestic Honda.  You could replace it yourself.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: gargantula99 on February 16, 2011, 09:47:48 PM
$51 from Majestic or $70 and have the dealership do it?  For the extra $19 I would just let them do it and have somebody to blame if it doesn't work out.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on February 16, 2011, 10:05:17 PM
Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I think the guy said it was $60 something just for parts. Whenever I get time, I'll call him up and ask for a price quote.

Do you guys think it would be okay to mention doing it myself to him? I don't know if these dealerships don't like it or not if they hear a customer saying that they'll fix it themselves, haha.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: timot_one on February 17, 2011, 07:54:08 AM
They will probably give you a number of reasons to not do it yourself.  If the price isn't much more than the part, have them do it.  If you're like me and your time is worth more than the $20 extra you might spend on labor, just go ahead and do it yourself.  It really shouldn't be that hard to do.

its a simple job and you could probably find the part for even cheaper at a junkyard, f the stealerships!

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: timot_one on February 17, 2011, 08:21:13 AM
Good point Dave.  I'm pretty sure if you buy the part from Honda, it comes with a 1 year warranty though.  A junk yard is another good option if you're in a pinch.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: Icebox on February 17, 2011, 08:47:18 AM
imo most of the time warranties dont mean shit on a modified car. the stealerships will always find a way to void the warranty. like saying "since the buckle was sprayed with lubricant, it's no longer under the lifetime warranty."

I finally received my replacement seatbelt buckle in the mail. I haven't gotten around to replacing it, but I should get it done by this Sunday. I bought the part from Bernardi Honda... they're pretty awesome. They sent me a manual that has instructions on how to change out the seat belt and the seat belt buckle for the front and passenger driver side seats. I scanned the instructions for the front driver side seat, so that if anyone else would like to tackle this job, they have something to follow.

Bernardi is good like that.  I've dealt with them before, and they're fairly friendly and helpful for a dealership that's in New England.

Stop knocking New England!

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: timot_one on March 19, 2011, 09:16:23 AM
No.  It's known that most people are "less than friendly" in MA.  I lived there for 11 years of my life, so I'm allowed to make fun of them.  It's just like how I make fun of Canadians and people from MI.  There are some good things about New England too, but the bad outweighed the good for me.

Anyway, it should be an easy task to pull off Jeff.  You probably won't need any help, but if you do, just hit me up.

So here's my story:  went out to the city tonight to go see a concert with my wife.  Parked the car at a lot w/ the attendant.  Came back three hours later to find that they hadn't even moved the car. The attendant then starts yelling at me that my car won't start and said that there is something wrong with it. I go to start the car and all I get is a clicking noise from the starter.  The dashboard goes really dim and no engine cranking. I get the guy to push the car so I could pop the clutch. It starts but the whole way home the air bag light is on.  I didn't want to turn on and off the car to see if the air bag light would turn off.  My question is would a battery going bad do that?

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: timot_one on March 20, 2011, 01:39:52 AM
When your engine is running, it will charge your battery and power your car's electronics.  Something else could be going on.  Have your battery and alternator tested if you can't start your car again.

I'm gonna go to autozone tomorrow and see if they'll check the battery.  I think it's on it's last leg, on really cold days over the winter the car would struggle to crank up.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: timot_one on March 20, 2011, 01:48:01 AM
It's probably your battery, but you never know.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light

I'd have to agree with Tim. I experienced the same thing with the wife's old TL when I was still living in LI. Actually, almost down to the letter. As for that guy yelling at you, I would've told him to go play a game of hide and go fuck yourself.

It probably it your batter but, there is a TSB out there for long cold cranking starts to replace the fuel pressure regulator on the J30's. I had to have mine done and it made a big difference.

So went to autozone, battery and alternator check out ok.  The air bag light is also off. It seems to be cranking up normal.  I guess if it does it again I'll try to figure something out.  Mike what are the symptoms of the TSB that you're talking about?

Thanks for all the help guys.

An occasional long cranking start. Basically what happens is the regulator sticks somtimes. TSB PDF is in post three on this thread.

Alright, I finally got the new seat belt buckle put in. Boy, what a PITA for being such a simple job.

Unbolting the seat, no problem. Unplugging the sensors from underneath, piece of cake. Taking the wire ties off to get the wires out of the way, not that big of a deal. Taking the seat out, eh, required two people to guide it out. Taking the fucking wire tie out that clips into a hole on the underside of the seat, oh my God. It's those kind of ties that they push into the hole, then click. After that, there's no fucking way of getting them out if you don't have access to the other side of the hole. It took me 30 minutes of cursing, finding the right tool to pry it out, and an occasional punch to the floor. After that was out, it took like 10 minutes to get it all back together.

Here are the remains of the wire clip that I'm talking about:

I haven't driven the car yet, but I'll keep you guys updated.

Jeff, those clips cost like $2.50.  It's money well spent when you consider the issues you had with the one you destroyed.  I'd just pwn the thing and replace it with a new one.  Also, there's a trick to taking the seats out.  I wish you woulda texted or called me, I could have helped you with that one.  I'm not a big guy, but I've mastered the technique of removing the front seats.

Billy, this (http://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine/honda~sub~wire~sps~81607-SDA-L70.html) is the first link that came up when I googled that part number.

Title: Re: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: Jeff Likes Bagels on March 20, 2011, 09:15:20 PM
Tim, I didn't care about the clip that I destroyed because the new seat belt buckle came with new clips. As far as taking out the seat, it would have been a lot easier if it wasn't all electric. I kept having to plug the negative battery terminal back in so that I could adjust it to a way that I could get underneath better. And obviously once I unplugged the sensors underneath, I didn't want to hook the battery back up for fear of engaging the airbags. It's all done though, so that's good.

Well, it's been almost a week now, and the light hasn't come back! One thing I noticed with the new buckle is that there's some kind of green insert, whereas the old one is black. I'm not sure if it's a revised part or what. I've been wanting to get a security torx set and take apart the old buckle to see what went wrong.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light

Rich, I'm guessing that it might not always be the seat belt buckle that's the issue. You might want to have that double checked, but that's just me.

Title: Re: Red Airbag Light
Post by: timot_one on May 02, 2011, 09:03:02 AM
I'd go with what Nelson said.  Make sure that it's the seat belt buckle before you start buying stuff.

The trick to getting the seat out is to make sure that the seat is centered over the rails.  Raise your steering wheel up as high as it can go.  Put a towel down to protect your plastic door sill cover.  Lift the bottom of the seat up and over the the door sill to pull the seat out.  Just remember, lead with the bottom of the seat to get it out.

No... it's part #3 in the diagram below for the driver seat (L) and if you need for the passanger seat it's part #1 (R). Just pick the color you need. Each color is a different part number! Select your vehicle then look for seat belts...

The buckle set is attached to the harness that plugs in under your seat. Literally takes 5 minutes to replace!

My airbag light would come on anytime I would take my seatbelt off with the car still running.

Gen's car is doing the same thing.  Will most likely bring it in this week.
